Jefferson, Texas groups partner for theatrical and artistic extravaganza

New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Jefferson, Texas…what do these fabulous cities have in common? Vibrant and diverse theatre! Arts on the Bayou, Jefferson’s First Annual Theatre Festival, debuts August 3, 4, 5 and 10, 11, 12, 2012 at the Transportation and Tourism Center in historic downtown Jefferson. For the first time four distinct theatre groups have joined forces to present a remarkable theatrical experience. Visual arts are represented, too, as four local artists exhibit their photography, sculpture, and painting. “The arts influence the fabric of community,” said Jefferson City Administrator Shawn Farrell. Formerly associated with Americans for the Arts and the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Farrell praised the Jefferson groups for working collaboratively for a common cause.

The Excelsior House Players present The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn. This two person play with intense dialogue dives deep into the complicated world of aging and loneliness. The witty and loaded drama will surprise and challenge as Fonsia Dorsey and Martin Weller explain and defend the triumphs and tragedies of their lives, playing Friday, August 3 & 10 at 8pm.

The Glory Dayz Players reprise their beloved melodrama Bats in Your Belfries. This comedy features a cast of all ages. The audience may “boo” and “hiss” at the infamous villain, Jay Gould. The popular melodrama has been previously performed in Jefferson and will delight its audience once again. Come and support this Jefferson favorite playing Saturday, August 4 at 2pm and Saturday, August 11 at 8pm.

Sanctuary Players Theatre Company presents The Red Velvet Cake War by Jones, Hope and Wooten. When the Verdeen cousins get together, hearts break, laws are broken, and everybody laughs until it hurts. When a wager is made over who can bake the best red velvet cake, a hastily planned reunion is thrown together. As a looming tornado nears fictional Sweetgum, Texas, the surprise ending will make you wish the Verdeens were your own loyal and dysfunctional family. It plays Saturday, August 4 at 8pm and Saturday, August 11 at 2pm.

Every Seventeen Minutes the Crowd Goes Crazy! by Paul Zindel, also offered by Sanctuary Players Theatre Company, explores the negative ramifications of child abandonment. When a family of children is left unsupervised for an undetermined period of time, the children act out in a variety of ways. While some family members hope to support themselves by hosting parties for their peers, others hold out hope their desertion will soon end. This play explores the challenges young people face in the world and from pop culture. It features a cast of talented young people ages 10-20 from all over east Texas and plays Sunday, August 5 and 12 at 2pm.

The Opera House Theatre Players have produced entertaining musicals in Jefferson for 23 years. Their 2012 summer musical hit was Guys and Dolls (Jr), an American classic. Will Hot Box dancer Adelaide and gambler Nathan Detroit finally get married after a seven year engagement? Will Sky Masterson find true love with Salvation Army missionary sister Sarah Brown? Come and be entertained by some of East Texas’ finest as excerpts from their summer musical are performed Saturday, August 4 and 11 at 5pm.
